The Broken Hill Railway Line-Special Feature.

Good Morning,

Today is Wednesday the 16th of October, 2019.

For some time now I have been investigating the 1919 Broken Hill Railway Station, and in doing so have picked up on a lot of the History of the Broken Hill Railway Line, which was opened in stages.

One of the sections of the line was opened in 1919, between Broken Hill and Menindee.

In the above link there is a list of Stations and sidings that were on the line in the early days, 40 plus have been listed.

The Trida to Menindee section of the Railway Line was completed in 1927, in November.

The First Broken Hill Express Passenger train arrived in Broken Hill on the 7th of November 1919, when the line opened from Trida. I remember reading some where the first passenger train was on the 20th or the 25th. Will have to check my notes.

As well as Freight, the Line to Broken hill has the Explorer and the Indian Pacific call at the Railway Station.

Ivanhoe is a Railway Station on the Broken hill line. It opened on the 19th of August 1925, and, was the Terminus of the line until the 7th of November 1927.

Here are some Photos of Ivanhoe from Bundy Colonel's Collection.

Comments

  1. Thank you for the nostalgia. Can almost see my childhood home we were approximately 50 metres south of the 'old' Broken Hill station. Guess I got my interest from that period. I made friends with the fettlers, drivers, firemen and other rail workers. The Goods Shed was located just to the north of the station, a few yards/metres across the line.

  2. Beaut pics of the western branch, I was at Ivanhoe from 1990 to closing on 30th Nov 1996. Sad day for all. Approx 400 employees west of Orange lost their jobs
