Railcars-Railmotors 11-06-2020

Good Morning,

Today is Thursday the 11th of June, 2020.

This Write Up/ Story is about the Rail Vehicles that have been used in Australia since the Railways started using Railcars/ Railmotors.

An early model was Railmotor Number 14 used in Queensland.

In New South Wales, Railmotor number one was the First of Maybe two to be used in the State.

In South Australia, the Saurer Railcar was used.


This Railmotor was/is housed at the Ipswich Railway Workshops.

McKeen Railmotors/Railcars were used in Queensland in 1911, but only lasted a short time.


A McKeen Railmotor/Railcar at the Toowoomba Railway Station in 1923.

Above is Railmotor 74, currently located at a Cleveland Museum in Brisbane.


Above is Railmotor 76, currently located at Gympie in Queensland where it is operated by the Mary Valley Rattler group.

The Fageol Railcar was used in South Australia.

McKeen Railmotors/Railcars were used in Victoria, starting operations in 1911.


The above Railcars only lasted for a short period in Victoria as well.

Walker Railmotors were also used in Victoria.

In 1923, the CPH Railmotor was introduced in New South Wales.

A WAGR Class A1 Railcar, used in the North of the state, able to carry 8 passengers and 1,5 tons of Freight.

  1. Can anyone provide more data on the AO, esp AO431. Petrol motored. Ran on Boulder Loopline. Had a siren.

    Type of engine, drive?. Seats? Braking system. Coupling ability?
